The average American consumes almost 150 pounds of food additives per year, making it a multi-billion-dollar food processing industry.  This breaks down to about 130 pounds of sugar and sweeteners, 10-15 pounds of salt, 5-10 pounds of “enriched” vitamins, flavors, preservatives, and colored dyes.

Natural and Artificial Flavors… A majority of these food additives, flavorings and preservatives, are masked behind the names “Artificial Flavors” and “Natural Flavors”.  Most processed and packaged foods have over 300 unnatural chemicals hidden inside.  How is that possible when these harmful substances are not listed on the ingredient label?  Unfortunately, the FDA has allowed companies to add hundreds of toxins and chemicals under the code names, “Artificial and Natural Flavoring”.  Try to avoid the product if you discover either of those terms, usually listed at the bottom of the ingredient list.

What is MSG?  It stands for Monosodium Glutamate.  This chemical has been called a preservative, but it is actually a taste enhancer, significantly modifying the flavor and taste of the food.  If a food has gone bad, MSG can trick your taste buds so that you think it is still nourishing and fresh.  Not only could you be eating rotten food, but it has also been proven that MSG can create harmful side effects.  It can damage and create an imbalance in the body’s cardiac, gastrointestinal, circulatory, muscular, and neurological systems.  Eating MSG can lead to respiratory, hyperactivity, vision, skin and urinary tract conditions.

When reading labels note that the following ingredients always contain MSG:

* hydrolyzed protein
* sodium cassienate
* yeast extract
* maltodextrin
* autolyzed yeast
* textured protein
* calcium cassienate
* hydrolyzed oat flour

These ingredients usually contain MSG:

* Malt extract
* Malt flavoring
* Bouillon
* Barley malt
* Broth
* Stock
* Flavorings
* Artificial flavorings
* Natural flavorings
* Natural beef flavoring
* Natural chicken flavoring
* Natural pork flavoring
* Seasonings

These ingredients could have MSG:

* Whey protein
* Carrageenan
* Smoke flavor
* Soy protein isolate
* Soy protein
* Whey protein
* Vegetable gum
* Corn syrup
* Pectin

Note: Soft Drinks, candy, and chewing gum can also be sources of hidden MSG

Have you ever heard the expression, “I feel full, but not full of the taste”?  MSG is the culprit.  Fast food restaurants use it for this very purpose — it keeps you coming back for more! MSG is even used in cosmetics, shampoos and hair conditioners — especially those that contain hydrolyzed proteins or amino acids. Reactions to MSG may occur immediately after contact, or as much as 48 hours later.  Some people react to very small amounts of MSG while others react only to large amounts or excessive usage.  Why take the chance when you have a choice not to?

    Wow! At first glance I thought it was going to be hard to remember all of that when checking labels. I guess breaking it down into categories will help. Thanks for the info!
